Toro Y Moi is so ill. I respect and can relate a lot with Chaz Bundick. He’s an honest artist and the dudes understanding and appreciation of music is dope. The future of the music industry is NOT about combining genres or creating new ones. The Major Labels and Media conglomerates want to be able to categorize art in order to categorize and define the market allowing them to capitalize while mitigating risk. Sheeeeit, its our natural primal instinct to want to categorize and label things and people so we know what to expect or how to explain things so I don’t look at it as a negative thing.
See the main problem is record labels are attempting to clench on to the old business model of manufacturing an artist, selling records, and making money. That model served its purpose well when technology was leaning in the favor of the labels, but technology giveth and technology taketh away. Long story short, we can all download all your shit.. for free.. anywhere.. anytime.. from a fucking smart phone.. BITCH. AND not only did we kill your revenue stream but now anyone can produce, write, and record a song anywhere.. anytime.. from a fucking smart phone.. BITCH. So now the individuals that comprised the ‘market’ these corporations were attempting to capitalize from are now competing. The horror.. the horror..
I don’t blame or judge anyone for trying to control the uncontrollable and foresee the unforeseeable because that is how we evolve. But any actions inspired by fear, and not love, WILL fuck shit up. It’s like the over-controlling boyfriend who’s mad because someone else smashed his girl BEFORE they were together. He checks up on her consistently, doesn’t allow her to have guy friends, and hates her friends. He is living in anger to mask the fear he has of losing her. Anyone that has been in a relationship will tell you it’s just not gonna work out (word to Mayer Hawthorne). I’ll go a step further and say thanks because that’s how dudes like me take girls from dudes like you. And once that happens and all control is lost what do you do? Torment yourself attempting to cling onto whatever is left until you eventually get over it and move on.
We weren’t created out of fear, it was out of love. I haven’t worked on music my entire life because I feared what would happen if I didn’t, it was out of love for the art form and a hope that I’d be able to take care of my family financially while pursuing my dreams. I’d love that, wouldn’t you? So how do we solve the conundrum? The answer is through chaos and evolution. To be continued..
